Big Bow

Dear Alisha,

Baby girl hair accessories…please discuss.

Sincerely,
Say No to the Big Bow
Note to readers: this is my kind of question! Short, brimming with complaint, and about babies. Say No Big Bow even included links to hair-bow-challenged babies. So thank you. Thank you.

Dear Say No to the Big Bow,

I enjoy both large accessories* and making babies look foolish, yet the trend of giant, loud hair bows for babies has grown out of control.
See what I mean:
[Let's just get this out of the way, the babies are all adorable, despite the hair accessories.]

There's a baby under there. (In drag.)

I'm scared (of Chuckie)

Who's really the turkey?

I am trying to think of a kind way to say 'I think these bows are tacky beyond words'.
I feel so sorry for this (cute) baby. What are her chances for a tasteful childhood? Who will teach her?

There is something to be said for bald heads and baby scaled hair accessories. If only I had a little baby to demonstrate what I mean...

She needs a pot of flowers on her head!

I like the little glued on bows. When else in life will she get the chance?

I wasn't sure how I felt about headbands before I had a daughter, but they have their place. Let's say you are very bald, they establish a hairline.

I am not against a small flower either. Small baby=small flower.
I bought these cute, smaller sized headbands off etsy from Sweet Violet Kisses.
But they're not with out hazards.

When in doubt, keep it simple.
If you like the giant flower trend, enjoy it, flower it up. Just keep in mind this is a trend that will look dated at some point (like a year ago), so don't take every photo with a bouquet on your head.

Is it just me and Say No Big Bow? Would you like to disagree? I can totally handle it. Discuss.

*unnecessary side story: In 7th grade I wore my hair pulled back in a ponytail, bangs fluffed in front, with a giant decorative bow over the pony holder. My mom learned how to make these enormous bows at a homemaking night and I loved them. I wore them frequently enough to earn me the nick name "Big Bow", only it was sung to the tune of a 7-11 commercial that said "Mobile Judge" (does anyone remember those commercials??)
. So I get it.

It was about time someone addressed this issue! Babies the world over thank you, Alisha. They are sick to death of being made to look like fools. Enough is enough.

I used to glue smallish bows on my daughter's bald-ish heads. I wish I still could but middle schoolers are not down with that sort of thing...

I agree with you and "Big Bow" I think they distract from the beauty of the baby they adorn. I enjoy the right size flower or bow, but when I see a mother and an infant wearing the same flower in their hair, there is a problem. Mom's head is 10 times bigger then baby, and the flower is as big as the baby's head. I say stick to size appropriate hair accessories!

I'll admit, I do think enormous bows are cute on little girls, keyword being little. I think it looks silly on girls older than maybe 10 or 12? Maybe I'll feel differently when I have kids, but I think big bows and flowers should stay on little girls heads.

Latest hair trend I loathe: hair feathers! What's with them?

I can't believe moms would put bows/flowers on their babies that are bigger than the head, lol! That looks sooooo tacky! I am a huge fan of small to medium sized flowers and bows though. My almost 2 year old will hardly even leave a small barette in so we don't do the bows, flowers or headbands very often.

Your baby is a doll!

First things first, Violet is beautiful. (Of course, you knew that.)
Second: You're back! (You are back, right?)
Third: The bows. Okay, so I feel that I have a little bit of an excuse seeing as how I wasn't taught in the ways of fashion and non-tacky-ness. You should see the pictures. Hopefully you never will. I have been guilty once or twice of putting large bows on my baby girl, but I always end up ripping it off her head once we get to church (or wherever) because I know, deep down, that it's wrong. I was given a bunch of flowers and bows at my baby shower, so I sometimes feel like I need to put them to good use. NOTE: none of my bows or flowers are as big as any that you have pictured. But I still feel like I've made a mistake! I rather enjoy the bald look for some reason. Natural and simple.

So here's my question: where did you get those sweet little headbands and flowers? Oh, and what do you glue bows on with? Elmer's?]

Also, I agree about the feathers. What's up with that??

I'm glad you are putting a stop to this, Alisha. Otherwise, we Americans will end up with the something akin to the British hat thing (i.e. Princess Beatrice, Royal Wedding).

Such a funny post Alisha, I have been waiting for this.

Your Violet is the most beautiful baby, I want to hold her again so bad. Please do tell where you got the adorable and dainty little headbands, I would love to give them away as baby gifts to help correct this horrendous problem that plagues little baby girls across the country.

The wig is sensational.

Thanks for all the compliments, they're going to Violet's head.

I put up a link to where I purchased the headbands from. May I also say they were fairly inexpensive, came cutely packaged, and the name alone- right?

Timely. I just bought Charlotte a big fluffy tutu and a crochet headband with two marabou puffs sticking out the top. True, it's her Halloween costume, but it could be one of your photos. Halloween is a time to get away with such overstated fashions.

Violet makes a stunning model, as always.

The most popular hair accessories are head bands and clips. Hair bows and ribbons are also very fashionable.

Isn't it something that this group is so concerned about being stylish instead of tacky with baby hair accessories, and we are looking at photos of my beautiful granddaughter and someone elses wearing dog wigs! How can any of you talk about others being tacky?

If this was facebook, I would "like" Judy Ethington's comment.

About two days after you posted this, a friend sent me some pics of her little one, and there on the top of her babies head was a HUGE flower. Made me laugh.

I am so glad there is another mom who has the same sense as I do! The big bows/flowers are awful! I'm loving the fabric rosettes, felt flowers & crochet flowers tho - sized appropriately of course. Simple is ok!

No one mentioned Girlie Glue! I swear by the stuff! It is an all natural hair accessory glue that really holds little bows and flowers of and shape size or material- ALL DAY! Washes off easily too. I really like them simple too. Check this stuff out! How do you stick a bow on your baby's head? GIRLIE GLUE!

I'm just thinking ... "How about NOTHING ???" My rule of thumb would be, if you have to GLUE it on and/or if it's bigger than the baby's head (or, the baby itself), ummm... maybe not. :)
