Boot-y-licious

It's time. I have been thinking about the subject of this post for a long, long time. Some of you need to hear this more than others. I hope you'll take it as intended (with love, criticism, mockery) and plan your lives accordingly.

Unless you have been living under a rock, or in Coolidge, you will have noticed already that boots are huge this season. Expect to see them constantly. Even in Arizona, as soon as the temperatures quit reaching over 100 degrees, expect booted legs to start showing up. (With tank tops! Don't get me started!!)

What we need to talk about it when boots go wrong.
Here's what I anticipate seeing when cold weather arrives: skanky, ill-fitting, outdated "sexy" boots. On my better days I have wanted to pull some of you aside and whisper, gently delivering the blow, letting you know of your boot folly, and pleading with you to change. On my crankier days I have wanted to publicly shame you for wearing such foolish, cheap, stolen-from-a-15-year-old-hooker boots, ending with a slap on your face or tearing the offending boots off. Instead I try to avert my eyes.

I asked for volunteer photos of big calves on facebook, and this one perfectly illustrates my point. (I have seen worse in person, mind you.) It also shows another pet peeve of mine- sawed-off square toes!! They make me so angry!!

Let's get specific.
Problem #1 Too Tight. If you have larger, strong, voluptuous calves, you cannot smash them into a slender cut knee-high boot. The results are dastardly. Instead of celebrating your shapely figure, it looks like you are apologizing for having big calves. It looks vulgar. You deserve better. You undoubtedly are muscular yet sensual and should display your legs as to maximize their attractiveness. As I see it, here are your options:
1. Extended calf boots. There are more and more of them available each year. Also there are some styles of boots that are made to fit loose and that may work for you.

2. For some of you, extended calves will still be too small. You must quit wearing knee high boots. I'm sorry, but like I said, you deserve better. You look good in regular heels so wear them with stocking for winter.

3. Not exactly a boot, but a bootie, They come to the ankles and might be an acceptable choice. Beware of mid-calf boots. I think they will hit you in your fullest part and only make you look larger or like the lower half of your leg is cinched into the boot and the top half is exploding out the top.

Nine West. Just think how good your calves would look in these beauties!

If you are reading this thinking "sure, Alisha, it's easy for you to say quit wearing boots, because you'll never have to with your proportionate but well toned calves!" (thank you). It is your best interest I have in mind.

This was the funniest submission. I just want to pinch those chubby calves!

Problem #2 Cheap and outdated. I get it. Boots are expensive and you have a shorter season to wear them than normal shoes. The expense comes from the large amount of material required. It's easy to find synthetic boots at a fraction of the price and think that is the way to go. The problem is that because there is so much material, the cheapness is more apparent. Most pleather or synthetic boots aren't fooling anyone. They look cheapie and buckle around the ankles. I an not saying all synthetic boots are off the table, I've seen a couple of fakes that I thought were leather and were in a trendy style that I don't think I would want pay the real leather price of. Either buy real leather or really good fakes. This is where the term "investment dressing" applies.

If you are going to buy a pair of boots and I have convinced you to buy leather, these will cost more and you will no doubt want to get your money's worth out of them. I will suggest buying a classic style that will last you several years. There really is no such thing as buying a pair that will
always be in style, but as close as you can come to it. Look for something simple. Nothing too trendy, not too many bells or whistles, no scrunching, no square toe, no pointed toe, no platform bottom. Yes to real leather that fits well. Yes to a rounded toe. Yes to good leather.

These Christian Louboutin might just look good forever.

A basic riding boot, from Cole Haan, would be worn frequently and for years.

I don't want you to think that I am always this catty, my excuse is that this is a subject that has needed addressing for years. YEARS. Oh how I've suffered.

So you don't think I'm all complaints, let's talk about upcoming fall trends a little more.

Over the Knee Boots. I like this but I understand that they can go wrong so easily. They're so close to overly-suggestive instead of fashionable. To play it safe, I suggest wearing a flat heel with over the knee styles.

These boots were made for stalking,by Tori Burch

by Jessica Simpson. Wait, did I just use Jessica Simpson as an example of something non-skanky?!

That said, I don't wear flats. I'm on the hunt for the perfect pair of respectable high-heeled over-the-knee-boots. How to wear them: cautiously. Wear over jeggings or with a dress or skirt, and the skirt should cover the top part of the boot. So you look like you have one long, booted leg. Since my legs are short (but well shaped) this makes me a little nervous, but it's a trend I'm excited to try.
A little like these NineWesters.

Ankle Booties. It has taken a little time for me to come around to this trend, but I'm hesitantly there now. My concern is that it cuts my feet off at the ankles and makes me look shorter, but I'm willing to roll with it for now.

Two trends in one, Lace and Pain. Where would I wear them? And with what? Everywhere. Soccer practice. With jeans. (I'm lying. I'm much too lazy to put that kind of effort into mid-day dressing.)

Pure hatred. From Topshop.

Practical from J.Crew. These I would wear to soccer practice.

Lace Ups: a short lived trend.

For the Johnny Depp fans our there, worn and rustic by Charles David.

Remember what I said about being overly suggestive?

No.

Try these instead
Both by Christian Louboutin

I like this trend, from H&M, so they are in my price range for a don't-hold-your-breath-on-wearing-them-next-year-style.

What boots will you be wearing this season?

to put it gently and in great fear of incurring your wrath: none. When I don a boot, I feel pretentious and ridiculous teetering around in them.

If forced or if I lived in the arctic tundra, I would wear a flat boot, (I still haven't mastered heels and doubt I ever will) like the Tori Burch, only I'd take the heavy duty scissors to them and cut off the top 6 inches. (kind of jking) So maybe I'd better go for the Cole Haan.

really? you'd wear the gray moccasin looking boot? doesn't look like you, only the wedge part does.

I bet nobody fully appreciates all the witticisms in this post except for me.

Cowgirl boots...which I noticed did not make your list. (It's okay. I don't pretend to know anything about fashion.)

thank you, i couldn't have said it better myself!

boots and coats and such make me wish az had a longer winter.
i also wish i didn't work with a bunch of nerds who couldn't care less about fashion. it's bad enough i'm a girl, let me draw even more attention to myself by wearing something other than khakis and a polo shirt. every. single. day.

I'm going to wear the same boots I had last year and the year before. Yes, I'm cheap like that. I don't know if my calves are too big. But I like to wear my boots because they keep me warm and I think they look nice. I really don't keep up with fashion, it changes too much, and rotates back anyways. If it's the right price, my taste, if it makes me look great, and it's comfortable, then I will think about buying it. And if some famous designer or media mega star is wearing it, then it makes me not want to buy it. I could care less about those people, and I don't want them to think they have any influence over me.
Alisha, you do always look amazing and I admire that of you. I do apologize if my boots or lack of fashion scares you. Honestly, I'm not out to give you a fright, and probably unfortunatley for you, I'm not going to change my ways.

I am always a few years behind the fashion trend. I think most of the boots you featured were cute (well the good ones) but I still can't see myself buying any of them. But I will probably start loving them and really want to get a pair just before the style has moved on. Oh man. I need help. Want to do a post on the a few of the latest fashion trends to help me out? That would be great. If you do, maybe I will go buy a pair of boots to start me off.
Oh and I also hate it when the bulge is hanging out over the boots, but I also don't like it when they are too loose, it is a tricky thing to get those knee high boots to fit just right.

Everyone's, but we won't be wearing them on our feet...if you know what we mean...

I will be wearing my Jessica Simspon cowboy style in tan. Its actually quite similar to the knee lenths you showed, but I can wear under my jeans. Rounded toe, 2-3 inch heel, good for casual daytime wear.
That is, if my feet/calves don't get too big with pregnancy!

I have been eyeing the ankle boots. I am generally opposed to them on shorter women, for obvious leg lenth reasons. I think if it were more loose around the ankle, it might help the leg look thinner?
Also, the lacey lingere heels would be great on a date! Do you own them already?

I have been waiting for this post. I swear to you each time I buy ANY pair of shoes and especially boots I always think"I wonder what Alisha would say about these?" I love boots but have never found a pair or had another trusted opinion (such as yours) along with me to get me to fork over the cash. So I have always bought cheep, but instead of pleather, I gravitate more towards a suede-type material. My favorites are a tall black slouchy pair I found at Fred Meyer last year. And you guessed it, there was a buckle around the ankle and at the top. I think they are so cute though. I also bought a pair of grey ankle boots that help me get over my skinny jean anxieties. They are also kinda slouchy around the ankle with three little snaps. I wonder what you would say about them. Can I send you a pic and get your comments? It would be like the good old days of shopping with you, oh how I miss those days.

I'm glad you brought this up, great tips, maybe some day I'll get a pair and not look too dumb.

Rebecca said...

I'll be wearing the same black ones I wore last year with skirts. You said you liked them and I don't think you would lie about such a thing.

I do have a pair of brown ankle high boots too but I only have worn them to dress up jeans or with slacks. I don't think I would ever wear them with a skirt/dress.

If I got another pair of boots I would want something I could wear with jeggings or skinny jeans, but then I would have to actually buy and wear skinny jeans. I am still hoping that fashion passes before I get brave enough to try it.

Alisha said...

Jana, I wouldn't expect you to wear boots, so you're off the hook. I do think you could wear a flat boot and still look like a chic version of yourself.

Leslie, the idea is if you buy a good pair of boots, you can wear them year after year, if that's your thing.

Iknowjewels, I don't own any of these boots. I wouldn't mind owning thee lace booties, but I don't think I would get enough wear out of them to justify the expense. I need a more everyday pair.

Angie, send me the pictures!! I bet I'd like what you picked out.

Trac, stick with me and you won't look dumb. :)

Rebecca, I do like your boots. They follow all the rules and are perfectly instyle again this year. Great fit.

We hope Alisha will tolerate our fashion errors just as we tolerate her pettiness and insecurities.

This sort of narcissism is commonly found in middle school.

I will be wearing booties and boots. I do have long legs. But sometimes these make boots look too suggestive. I won't wear over the knee boots because no matter how respectful looking the actual shoe, combined with a long boot, they look too..... look at me!

But I love booties, and high heels similar to booties (same shape, less material... it's hot in AZ).

Also, I like the scrunchy flat suede (looking) mid thigh high boot. They can be worn with skinny jeans, a long sleeve shirt and a scarf at any time of day.

Unknown said...

btw, that gray boot is ugly, and i would ask you wht you would do something so mean and offensive to everyone who had to look at you in them. blech.

ALSO, I love your blog, and the OPTION to read about your opinion on style. I also love that you care about everyone, no matter what they're wearing (no sarcasm, for once).

Okay, one more... The lace boots are the PERFECT boot to go with a knock off or synthetic. Obviously they are the least likely to be worn every year, and you're not looking at a bunch of leather, so you can get away with more.

Mandee said...

Hahaha, I will never look at boots the same way again! I love how you make calves seem so sexual... That vulgar calf cleavage kinda makes me want to get a calf job ;) Agreed that a well fitted boot is important if you want to look classy, but I would rather see boots that are too tight than too loose.

I'm drooling over the tall black boot w/mahogany heel and the ultra high Nine West boot. Not a fan of boots w/out heels but they are starting to grow on me. Don't think I would ever wear ankle boots unless they were super casual like the J. crew ones. If those came in brown or tan I would make them my new everyday shoe.

LOVE your new Dear Alisha pic (Stunning!) and that baby calf!

Chelsea said...

Alisha, as always, I'm smiling. I have my own boot rant - similar to yours but with a few tweeks. Why do boots inspire such strong feelings? I think it's because they can go so wrong and most often do. I like maybe 2% of the boots I see.

Anyway, I'll be wearing the same J. Crew Montana boots that I've had since 1998. Don't even pretend you don't know the ones I'm talking about.

Also, I've ventured into the land of oxfords.

how very dissapointing. I thought I had left all the bullies at high school. I am a big girl, give me some credit! i sent you a picture of me in boots(thank goodnes you didn't use my pic), yes they were tight on my calves, but there would be no way in hell i would ever wear them with anything except under pants. If I had of known you were going to publicly torment , pick on, and humiliate me ,I would not have sent in my picture. I take pride in how i dress, sometimes i worry too much.. incase i run into over opinunated ppl, that seem to think that we need their input in our lives. To spend a dayin our shoes ( or god forbid, tight boots !!) weight issues stemming back from high scholl. still haunt me 20 years later.. Just because you said sorry before. does not make it ok. I wonder how the girl really feels about her picture being used...

That is my calf and I am personally thrilled that my picture was chosen. I think my calves are very sexy (at least they are now after my silicone implants ;)and that is why I choose to flaunt them the way I do. I love Alisha but don't always agree with her opinions on fashion. Enjoying my 15 minutes of fame :)

I don't like flat boots, but that's because I'm short. I feel all stompy and bottom heavy in them. Jana would look super cute in them though, just like you said.

The one you said you'd wear to soccer practice with the narrow wedge- I have a few shoes with that type of sole and I really hate walking in them. I'd rather wear full blown high heels than that kind. They make me feel really unstable. (I hate it when people refute you just to be practical, and here I just did, tsk tsk.)

I'm looking for a knee high boot because I'd look ridiculous in the over the knee trend. I don't want a plain boring boot, it's got to have something to stare at for a minute... I found the cutest pair last year with a pretty silk bow at the back of the knee, not laced up the back...shouldve snatched them up, but hey, it was March. And not my size.

Carolyn said...

I'll be wearing boots and booties, if I can find the right pair. I love the bootie trend even though I have short legs.
Confession - my boots do have a squared off toe. gasp. In my defense, it's a tapered toe and not just totally cut off right at the toe. Plus they're leather, a good heel height, and fit my calves perfectly. so there.

Erica said...

Dibs on the Jessica Simpson riding boots.

I have a pair of heeled over the knee boots I wear with leggings or over skinny jeans and I love them. They work much better on my bigger calves than mid length boots which make me look like way too hooker-esque.

Anonymous said...

I think I have the perfect pair of knee high boots that fits all your requirements. I have to say I'm not a fan of the over the knee boots, but have noticed Victoria Secret has lots of them. Surprisingly some of them aren't that skanky looking. You should probably check it out though its harder to make sure the fit is right since they're via catalog

Lets just let people be who they are and not judge. We all come in different shapes and sizes with different tastes and style. God intended it to be that way. If we were all the same with the same opinions we would be just plain boring. Quite honestly I wouldn't be caught dead in the lace boots. Not my style but I won't judge if you wear them.

Just asking for myself, mostly....and at what age can you still wear cute boots? Is there an age limit?

I have naturally curly hair that can sometimes get very frizzy and look disastrous! Very few products show lasting results, but this is one of them.

MoroccanOil makes my hair looks less frizzy and feels softer to the touch. This definitely helps tame my mane!

I never thought it could be possible. I own about 7-9 hair straighteners from cheap to deluxe. Not one of them could

penetrate my thick, curly hair enough to do anything other than heat up the cuticle and make sizzling noises. This iron is going to change my life. I spent 700 on ionic straightening, and this iron works

better!!!! If you spend any amount of time wielding a heavy blow dryer, forget about it. I used this iron on Air-dried, curly hair. I wish I could upload a digital photo- I look like a hair commercial.

Unbelievable but true!!! I LOVE IT!!!
