Dear Friends

(yes, I've used this photo before, lay off me!! I'm in a time crunch here!)

Dear Friends,

I just counted up how many families I'd like to drop off treat boxes to, and it's staggering. I included next-to-my-house-neighbors, the ladies I visiting teach, my husband's home teaching families, my good friends, people who are new and I'm getting to know, and friends who I think are expecting it. Don't ask which category you fall in. All in all, it's nearing 30 families. What am suppose to do? Give each family a cookie to share and be done? I have my reputation to think about! By chance, are any of you swearing off sugar for the holidays, and thereby allowing me to scratch you off my list? Are any of you willing to let me off the hook?

This is impossible,
Alisha

p.s. Just so you know, I am keeping a photo journal of holiday treats delivered to me. Look forward to a post about that, with commentary, in the near future.

I'd say this is a round-about comprag.

You're off the hook with us. I'm not going to guess at what category I fall into, but I consider myself your friend and I will still like you whether you give us anything for Christmas or not.

Please never give us anything out of a sense of obligation. I don't enjoy gifts when I know someone resented giving/making them.

Also, Ben and I are counting our calories right now. True, we probably would have made an exception for YOUR baking, but think of it as a favor to help me get into skinny jeans (although really I'm more of a boyfriend jean kind of girl - style-wise and thigh-wise).

Just FYI, don't think anything of it when we bring your family a gift. It's 85% done, to be exact. No going back now. The kids helped, so adjust your expectations accordingly. :)

I knew you'd say that Jana!!! But it's not. I just need someone to save me. I WANT to make 30 treat boxes.

You're off the hook with our family too - but I have to say...it's not a true holiday season without Baking from the Garritys.

Just so you know - it would be an honour to even take your left-overs - or crumbs - in a zip-loc bag (sans pretty bakery box)

You are off the hook with us also. Christmas Eve will be enough. :)

that'd be funny if everybody bowed out and you were left with all these rotting treats. another blog post!

If you loved your friends, you would make 30 baking boxes. Haven't you ever heard of meth?

My dear caring older sister, I think you need to simplify..... Like you're always telling me...

I don't actualy believe that. Get crazy! Hire some young women. It'll cost more, but you can have it all. Have them bake in your house while you're working on packaging. Or whatever role you need them to fill. If delivering all the boxes is what makes you happiest at christmas, go for it. Just recognize that this is what makes your season merry.

No thanks. I've already gained 5 lbs with all the yummy treats our family has received already (we're so popular)!

Just kidding. The real reason I am letting you off the hook with us is so I won't get offended if I don't make it into your top 30 ;)

Alisha--not sure if we made 'the infamous 30' this year, but if so, you're off the hook with us too... we can still be friends.

I'm in the same boat and have had to cut down the goodies list to just a handful. I hope I don't offend anybody! (On the other hand, I just heard H&M's coming this summer, so maybe we could all use a few less treats this holiday season.)

H&M is coming this summer? Finally? WHERE WHERE? Do tell all Tom+Lisa+2!!!

Some solutions:
Bake in between Christmas and New Years, or send out Valentine's treat boxes. Move the timing to make it less stressful

And I know you love to bake, but you could get several bags of Costco baby carrots and package those up along with some yummy dip to give out. Write a fun little note about how much you care about health and nutrition all year long.

And you don't know me and don't know if I'm serious or not. But you should do it.

Marie, that's a sweet suggestion but you lost me at Costco. :)

I second Bekah...I've had some major Alisha baking withdrawals.

I do have a question, answer candidly. (Do I really need to tell YOU that?) What "would" you say to those who say that are too intimidated to bring you something? Is it just an excuse to enjoy your masterful creations with no effort on their part to return the favor? Or do they really feel that way? Because I say that in my experience one of your true talents is your ability to truly enjoy un-critically, relish even, and surely compliment the food others make for you. Word to the wise. If you are afraid to bring Alisha cookies, cupcakes, baked goods she always appreciates a salad!

yah, I remember when I served her a piping hot bowl of beans at my house and she relished it and said it was so good. sincerely too.

Wait. is it visiting teach or visit teach?

There's got to be some English participle rule about when to use visit vs visiting.

I vote you do all the 30 boxes. Include several varieties of several things and go to new heights in packaging, taking pictures along the way looking like the perfect housewife.

Making 30 pretty little treat boxes sounds so fun to me - but only if the kids leave me alone, baby doesn't whine, and dinners are already done for the next coupla days. So, not happening this year. And I only have 29 friends...

Alisha,

I'm your new reader..you may remember me from
Coolidge, I remember you, I always thought you were in my brother's Hoang's class. Another thing, I think we
both have a love for Anthropologie .. so that being
said, can I be on the list? or can I have Rachel's box?
Since your going to making 30 boxes? Jana has my address.

After reading Bekah's question I felt like letting you know that even though I like to bake more than cooking, I don't like baking a lot of stuff at Christmas and handing them all out. What I DO enjoy is doing what I'm good at - I deliver lots of Christmas music in different venues to family and friends. Point being, do what you're good at. People that I do lots of music for and with (conducting) bring me lots of goodies at Christmas and I don't feel bad about thanking them without handing them theirs. (Besides, I feed choir members homebaked goodies and other treats 3 out of 4 Sundays, so I don't feel guilty.)
