(Cloth Napkins) Uncovered

Justin told me to quit stealing images, so for now you're stuck with my photos. Yes, we eat with these every night.*

Dear Alisha,

I want some fabric dinner napkins. You'd think after being married for 10+ years that I would have outgrown the paper ones. Alas, every dinner function - ach - even formal-ish ones...I pull out our trusty stack of paper napkins - making everyone feel as if we're at picnic. Where can I buy some? What do I look for? Polyester that won't stain? Plain cotton? Linen hem-stitch? (I don't mind ironing). Then we're on to WHAT color? Oh the possibilities. I'm so confused.

Sincerely,
Uncovered

Dear (Cloth Napkins) Uncovered, (I have to watch what I call you, we don't want to attract an unsavory crowd.)
I do not know whether to praise you or scold you. Let's start with a little of each. I'm so glad you have decided to join the civilized world and use real napkins. I don't want to over sell their elegance, but your whole life is about to change. As you dot the corners of your mouth with a soft, absorbent, lovely piece of fabric; you will wonder how you ever survived the past with crumpled, withered paper napkins.
Now comes the scolding: they are just napkins! You are not investing in a sofa or a college education. There is not even a lot of research to be done: anything you buy will be better than paper. I like both cheap and expensive as both have their charms. But since you seem the type of person who likes details and research, I will elaborate.

I generally prefer 100% cotton or linen napkins 20" by 20"or larger. Most polyester napkins are horrible, their only selling point is that you usually don't have to iron them. Their draw backs are that they are so unabsorbent that their users hands feel dirtier after having wiped them on the napkin, they show oil stains, and they look cheap. Some restaurant supply stores sell polyester napkins that are more absorbent and mimic the look of linen, but since you have already established yourself to be a person of character-one who doesn't mind ironing**-then just buy cotton or linen. That's what most stores sell anyways.

I would start with white. They look elegant and can be combined with anything. I like a nice hemstitch but really, any decent white napkin will do. I own the hotel white napkins from Pottery Barn with a white monogrammed 'G' on them. I like them well enough, they are thick, but like other napkins that I have purchased at stores like Macy's or Marshalls just as well. A word of advise: buy napkins you like but remember that your guests will be wiping their dirty mouths and hands on them. Do not make them irreplaceable or of such value that you will not want to actually use them. Have a few extra of a set so that if a couple are stained or torn you still have enough. I never buy less than 8 of anything for the table but of course 12+ is better.

Once you have established yourself as a respectable person who owns white napkins, feel free to move on to color. Burnt orange in the fall, pink at Valentines, sky blue in the summer, any or all would jazz up your table of previously discussed white dinner plates.
Hurry! You don't have time to waste!

A selection of my white napkins, at the ready.

To prove I'm not making this crap up, my colored napkin drawer. (The red and creams are in my ironing basket. I pack my Christmas linens with my Christmas decor, like any of you care.) I missed out on a set of violet napkins this fall at Target. They sold so fast that there was only one four pack left for me to drool over. Other napkins were purchased at Pier One, more from Target, Marshalls, I made the pink, the green were given to me.

Hemstitched linens available at Pottery Barn, set of 6 for $54. A little pricey, but hey, if you have money to throw away, they are a great basic.

Also pricey and available from PB. My birthday is in April... (I don't really need them)

The photo is lousy, but this set of 12 from Target is only $15. I don't mind light weight napkins, which I assume these are.
These break my "irreplaceable" rule but keep my "if you have it, use it" rule. Given to me by my Grandma, they are hand embroidered, light as air, delicate as a baby, linen that I use for Easter Dinner only. Love them!

* I am lying. We use them when company comes over and occasionally on our own. I am trying to teach our 3 boys to be civilized.
**More on the subject of Ironing later. Surprisingly, I have an opinion.

Now it's your turn to brag: Raise your hand if you use cloth napkins.

I actually use cloth napkins! (Yay, something I have in common with Alisha!)I have a huge collection, half of which I were gifted by my mother, the other half handed down to me by my mother. She's not fancy, she was just raised during the depression, and thinks paper napkins are wasteful and hurt the environment. I can hardly blame her (though I try...for lots of stuff). I have linen, cotton, poly, and blends. I cannot stand napkins that I have to iron though, and therefore use the poly-blend ones the most. My favorites for company are thick jet-black poly, and match our black dishes. My most used ones are faded cotton blend ones that I only use on my immediate family.

You've inspired me to pull out my cloth napkins again. I have to admit, they haven't been used since Lily's arrival, with the exception of one or two fancier feasts.

I love your blog Alisha. You are so entertaining.

Finally, I can answer one of your questions and not feel like a domestic dud. We too use cloth napkins - everyday, for every meal. It's better for the environment and I simply prefer them. Who wants a napkin that dissolves when it gets wet? Bleh!

Unlike yours, my napkin drawer is a horrible hodgepodge of mismatched prints and patterns, most of which need ironing, but are wrinkled anyway.

To address some logistics - every member of the family does not necessarily use a fresh napkin for every meal. If a napkin is soiled, it is tossed into the laundry basket. But an otherwise reusuable napkin is saved for the rest of the day, then tossed after the evening meal. (At risk of sounding snobbish - this is perfectly decent etiquette, BTW.) I think the traditional way of storing napkins between meals was to use napkin rings - uniquely identifiable by color or design - but I have hooks on the side of my kitchen island where I hang ours. My boys know which hook is theirs. But I promise, if we ever have company, everyone gets fresh, matching napkins. :)

Since my boys have been raised on cloth napkins, they even carry them in their lunch boxes. I let them pick their fabric and make a stack of small child-size napkins.

Finishing off my ridiculously long post, how do you care for your embroidered napkins, Alisha? I have some embroidered handkerchiefs that I would LOVE to use instead of scratchy tissues, but I never use them because I'm too scared to wash them.

Janalee said...

Would you be horrified to learn that we have a Family Napkin? We have one hand towel at the dinner table that we all pass around, or toss around (along with our shared cup).

There. This is the last straw. I've publicly embarrassed you. You are now free to end our friendship and tell people you may have remembered going to high school with some tall skinny freckled girl, but you don't remember much about what ever happened to her.

Rachel D said...

My post wasn't long enough... We also have a stash of washcloths for the kids. Especially for Lincoln, who seems to need a good scrub down after every meal. My boys sometimes use these instead of traditional cloth napkins...and then hang them on their hooks, of course.

Anonymous said...

Jana, love your response, I can't stop laughing! Alisha did you really grow up in Coolidge? Unlike Jana, we each have our own sheet of Bounty paper towel. But, I do take the time to wet them and fold them nicely.

Rachel, packing your kids cloth napkins to school? Aren't you a bit worried that they are going to be made fun of/punched in the face in school?

Rachel D said...

Dear Anonymous, yes and no. The background: My children's preschool (a) believes that you give children nice things and teach them to care for them, and (b) is VERY eco-conscious. Each child's "school supplies" include ceramic dishware for snack and lunch (not plastic and definitely not disposable), and parents are asked to pack a cloth napkin in the child's lunch each day.

As my older son entered public kindergarten and got a new lunchbox and "dish set" (plastic containers) for his new school, he asked me to make a new set of napkins for him.

And - yes - here's where I worried about him getting beaten up. I know no one else at public school new school would use a cloth napkin. I did worry about the social repercussions. Yet how do I tell my child to forget all the manners he's been taught and start wiping his mouth with his sleeve like all the other boys?

I told him no one else at the school would use a napkin. He said that was okay; he wanted one anyway. So I made one. ONE. Singular. As in - just enough for the first day when he realizes he'll never use it again.

But when he got to school, he whipped out his flame-print fabric napkin with a puffed up chest that said, "Yes, I know you are all jealous." I felt awkward for him (and for myself), but he was thrilled and so far it's stuck.

I'm sure the cloth napkin days are numbered. And when he doesn't want to take one anymore, that'll be fine with me. But for now, he's totally happy and none of the other kids care.

As for the social pecking order in his kindergarten class, he's not in danger of being picked on.

And of course my younger son will be toting cloth napkins and hugging trees for a few more years, along with the rest of his classmates.

Alisha said...

Rachel- I LOVE IT!! I am going to try to use cloth more with my boys. Maybe I need to make 'everyday' printed napkins that won't show dirt and doesn't have to be ironed. I'm inspired.

Jana, so funny. And gross. You could teach lessons along the line of "the redneck environmentalist".

Audrey, as if we don't have a ton in common. (we're both funny and charming)

Janalee said...

don't even call me redneck. And I was joking about the one cup. We're now up to about 3 at the dinner table.

Another thing. I've never had success in using a cloth napkin, they must have all been polyester so I've always preferred an absorbant paper one.

And I should do a post about this, but it's a ton of work schlepping dinner and dishes over to the table each night. back and forth back and forth we go until it's ready. that's why I try to minimize the fuss as much as possible by tossing a towel on the table for anyone who may need to wipe their hands.

one of these years we'll get proper.

Rebecca Larsen said...

This is laughing fodder for all day!

Alisha should replace all her nice pictures with your keepin' it real ones. Like their crumpled up shared napkin vs. your napkin drawers. Kinda like "whatever Martha", but it would be "Whatever Alisha."

My favorite everyday napkins are dark brown, I don't have to bleach them and any tomato based dinner comes off easily. Yes they are absorbent.

I have loved cloth napkins forEVER. Vintage handmade ones are my favorite, they are actually imaginative. But I keep those tucked away in the drawer...cuz they don't really match. I use them for little girls tea parties occasionally.

I think we would have more in common if my mother didn't force me to be you my whole life ;) While growing up I was like, "When I have a family of my own I will only use paper products!" She used her fine china and cloth napkins ALL THE TIME and I thought the time it took for us to wash the dishes by hand and iron the napkins could have been used to have more fun as a family and reduce the nagging and contention (I'm such a "yellow/white").

Although I use dishes, I make a special point to use all paper products when my family comes over to partay. If I wasn't still a stubborn rebellious teenager I'm sure I'd be all over the cloth napkin thing.

Katie Richins said...

I just love that you used "at the ready."

Judy Ethington said...

Comments were all so fun. We use a combination of cloth and paper. Sometimes I get and use a combination of cotton and, yes, polyester, and it's just fine. I even have gold lame' napkins that I really do use, but they don't wipe very well. They just look gorgeous! Sometimes I combine them with a cotton napkin. I love dressing up a table with cloth napkins, it looks so fantastic, but I didn't use them for everyday when my children were small. Just on Sundays and special holiday meals. Now Dad and I use them more often, and always with company. They just look so designerish!

Judy Ethington said...

BTW, the embroidered ones from your grandmother look like Madeira embroidered, and that had to come from ebay. I really like Madeira linens.

Mandee said...

To clarify, every Sunday, holidays, and whenever company comes over = "ALL THE TIME" and "fine china" = any fancy dishes that have to be washed by hand, to a lazy teenager (hehe).

I do appreciate the beauty of cloth napkins. All the embroidered ones are gorgeous! I would love to have a duvet cover (w/matching pillow cases) in my bedroom that look like your green ones. I hope your next post is about master bedroom decor!!

I really have to laugh at all these comments and I especially appreciate how honest Jana is. I used to take more care to the table and the look before my kids were born. Now I just don't have the time. I can't imagine all the time it takes to be eligant and proper. Who has that kind of time. Although it is something I fantasize about and hope to return to someday.
